Common Respiratory Illnesses

RTI’s account for over 6 million GP visits per annum in Australia creating significant health and economic consequences. Some researchers estimate that children under 5 years have a cold 23% of the time which can impact on the family significantly – in the need to care for their child and to take time off work.

Course Overview

Acute Respiratory Infections (RTI) are among the most common illnesses world-wide and as nurses who often provide support to families with RTIs, it is essential that we are providing sound advice and are able to recognise the child that requires extra supportive measures.

Current guidelines on the treatment and management of RTIs in children include supportive management such as hydration and rest. Over-the-counter (OTC) medications such as analgesics and cough medications may reduce the severity of symptoms, but they do not cure or prevent the illness.
