New Knowledge & Novel Solutions for Paediatric Needle Pain (formerly Needle Fear Solutions )

Procedural pain and poor pain management in children can lead to lifelong phobias, such as needle phobia, and short term procedural fails; it’s also often unnecessary. Although there are pharmacological treatments for pain, nurses can also use non-pharmacological methods for pain control.

Course Overview

In this webinar, Dr Amy Baxter, the paediatric emergency physician and brains behind Buzzy, shares with us the research behind pain and the negative effects of poorly managed pain on subsequent procedures. We will address pediatric medical procedures and the state of the art in reducing the impact of pain, short and long term. Dr Baxter also explores the relationship between pain, fear and attention and how making slight shifts in our practice can have a profound impact on the child and their experience.

Learning Outcomes

In this session, you will:

  • Gain an understanding of the current pain research and recommendations
  • Acquire knowledge of gate theory and pain management
  • Understand how positions of comfort can empower the child and their caregivers
  • Learn to anticipate a difficult IV and provide appropriate care measures to minimise the risk
